History

In 1904, Waitrose and Partners was founded by Wallace Waite, David Taylor, and Arthur Rose. It was taken over by the partnership with the John Lewis in 1937 that consists of ten shops and 160 employees. By purchasing the grocery business of South Essex, it had expanded to 12 shops in the chain in 1944. By the end of 1951, a self-service shop was converted from the Southend High Street Shop that becoming the first run by Waitrose.

The first Waitrose supermarket was initiated in Streatham, London in 1955 and expanded its business to the locations across South East of England and London during the 1960s. After that, it launched the stores across Hampshire, Cambridgeshire, and Essex.

From 1981, Waitrose was initiated the counter service for customers to provide the products such as fish, fresh meat, and cheese and became the first major supermarket to sell the organic foods in 1983.

Additionally, it had continued to expand the business to other locations and purchasing the stores from Morrisons, Somerfield, and Woolworths.

The shops of Waitrose had partnership with Alliance Boots to operate the branded pharmacies in 2009 and it helps to sell the food products of Waitrose.

On behalf of Waitrose.com online delivery service, a fulfilment centre was opened in West London in October 2011.

Owing to the commercial agreement with Ocado, the online delivery service at Waitrose had been restricted previously.

350 shops had included across the United Kingdom and it was initiated the cashless shop at the Sky under the Little Waitrose brand.

The closure of five shops was done in 2018 due to the profitability issues and the further five shops were sold to other retailer shops in 2019.

Brand and Marketing

Interbrand and Monotype Imaging was designed the logo of Waitrose primarily. The unique selling points are advertised by Waitrose.

Reading F.C. was sponsored by Waitrose from 2008 to 2015 and the England cricket team for three years from 2013 to 2016.

A series of adverts, in online, and on national television also released by Waitrose in March 2010 and was featuring the celebrity chefs.

Waitrose Duchy Organic

Waitrose was the first largest supermarket which selling organic food in 1983 and had an 18% share of the organic food market by the end of 2008. Under the brand of Duchy Originals from Waitrose, the Duchy range was relaunched with many lines in August 2010.

The value range of products was termed as “essential Waitrose” with the tagline “quality you’d expect and prices you wouldn’t”. By using simple white-based packaging, 1,400 products were branded with this name. Waitrose had included over 2000 items by the end of 2016 that making it one of the five foods and drink brands in UK.

Waitrose and Partners No. 1

Waitrose was introduced in Waitrose 1 in 2016 that is a premium market food brand. The company is always strived to provide the best services and launched the 520 food items. With a number of added lines, it was rebranded to become a Waitrose and Partners No.1. The healthy range of products are provided by Waitrose and Partners in which the meals are calorie counted and other types of foods like vegetables and fruits.
